Great Bear Ironworks Creates Western Toad Sculpture for Terrace Community Forest, Enhancing Education on Local Aquatic Ecosystems
Terrace, BC – Great Bear Ironworks, a renowned artisan studio based in Terrace, BC, is pleased to announce the completion of a new public art installation—a stunning 4ft-high Western Toad sculpture—commissioned by the Terrace Community Forest. The sculpture now sits adjacent to the pond at the lower end of the Ferry Island Trail Network, providing a unique educational feature for the local community and visitors.
The Western Toad sculpture, crafted with meticulous attention to detail, was designed to reflect the rich biodiversity of the region. Positioned at a key location along the trail, the toad will serve as a reminder of the importance of local wildlife and the protection of natural habitats. The sculpture is especially significant as the area is used by the Skeena Wild Conservation Trust to host educational camps for children, focusing on the region's aquatic ecosystems.
“We’re thrilled to have had the opportunity to work on this project,” said Steve Rogers, founder of Great Bear Ironworks. “The Western Toad is an iconic species in the area, and this sculpture is not just an art piece, but a way to inspire education and awareness about the local wildlife and the fragile ecosystems they inhabit.”
The area surrounding the pond has long been an educational hub for Skeena Wild, offering hands-on experiences for children to learn about aquatic environments, local species, and the importance of conservation. The toad sculpture adds a visual element to these educational activities, enhancing the overall experience for participants and fostering a deeper understanding of the natural world.
The installation of the Western Toad sculpture aligns with the Terrace Community Forest’s mission to promote conservation, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. The project serves as part of a broader initiative to incorporate public art into local natural spaces, creating opportunities for learning, reflection, and connection with the environment.
Great Bear Ironworks is proud to contribute to the community by providing art that not only beautifies public spaces but also educates and inspires future generations to appreciate the region’s rich wildlife and ecosystems.
