Created by local sculptor Great Bear Ironworks, this new public art piece honors the critical role that salmon play in the Skeena River ecosystem, a region famous for its extraordinary salmon runs.

Kitimat, BC – A new public art installation is bringing creativity, culture, and community spirit to downtown Kitimat. In collaboration with the District of Kitimat and the Kitimat Public Art Alliance, a striking series of eight Raven sculptures has been installed in the courtyard behind the mall entrance, transforming the space into a vibrant gathering area for residents and visitors alike.
The installation, designed to complement newly constructed planter boxes, brings a sense of life and connection to the downtown core. The Ravens, meticulously crafted by local artists, reflect the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the region. These iconic birds are a powerful symbol in many Indigenous cultures, representing transformation, intelligence, and community.

The initiative involves placing outdoor art installations at key mountain bike trail networks, aiming to elevate visitor experiences. Freehub Magazine is covering the project in print, as well as creating a film festival piece to tour the region.
Massive steel sculpture celebrates community and place
Nestled in the rainforest on the coast of northwestern BC is a towering Grizzly bear sculpture fashioned from dozens of lengths of steel. The 14.5-foot sentinel stands watch over the newly completed Oviatt Bike Park in Kitimat – a gift to the community by long-time Kitimat resident, businessman and philanthropist, Jack Oviatt.
