Kaien Island Celebrates the Cloudberry Trail: A New Chapter for Art, Nature, and Hammy the Deer

Prince Rupert, BC – The Kaien Island Trail Enhancement and Recreation Society (Kaien Trails) is proud to announce the opening of the Cloudberry Trail, a vibrant addition to its vision of an interconnected trail network across Kaien Island. This scenic 1-kilometer path weaves together art and nature, featuring a striking installation of three deer sculptures created by Great Bear Ironworks, including a tribute to the island’s beloved Hammy the Deer.

Honoring Hammy: A Tale of Resilience

Hammy the Deer captured the hearts of Prince Rupert residents in 2017 after being spotted with a hammock tangled in his antlers. For months, Hammy roamed the area, becoming a local icon and sparking conversations about the delicate balance between human activity and wildlife. His eventual release by conservation officers highlighted the compassion of the community and the challenges faced by local fauna.

Great Bear Ironworks’ three-deer sculpture installation—a majestic buck and two does—features Hammy as its centerpiece, symbolizing resilience and the enduring connection between people and wildlife.

“Hammy’s story resonates deeply with the community,” says Steve Rogers of Great Bear Ironworks. “Through this sculpture, we hope to honor his legacy and remind everyone of the beauty and challenges of coexisting with nature.”

The Cloudberry Trail: Art, Nature, and Community

The Cloudberry Trail stretches from the Prince Rupert Recreation Complex to the Kal Tire junction, offering a serene space for hiking, reflection, and exploration. Alongside the sculptures, the trail invites visitors to engage with the natural environment while celebrating the cultural and ecological heritage of Kaien Island.

The trail is part of Kaien Trails’ broader mission to develop a network of sustainable, accessible trails that connect the island’s communities and landscapes. As detailed on the Kaien Trails website, these projects aim to enhance outdoor recreation opportunities while promoting environmental stewardship and cultural appreciation.

“Every trail we build reflects our commitment to creating spaces that bring people together and foster a deeper connection to Kaien Island’s natural beauty,” says Steve Millum of Kaien Trails. “The Cloudberry Trail, with its sculptures and storytelling, is a perfect example of how art and nature can inspire and unite us.”
