Ravens Take Flight in Downtown Kitimat: New Public Art Installation Creates Gathering Space
A new public art installation is bringing creativity, culture, and community spirit to downtown Kitimat. In collaboration with the District of Kitimat and the Kitimat Public Art Alliance, a striking series of eight Raven sculptures has been installed in the courtyard behind the mall entrance, transforming the space into a vibrant gathering area for both residents and visitors.
The installation, designed to complement newly constructed planter boxes, adds a sense of life and connection to the downtown core. The Ravens reflect the region's natural beauty, while also representing transformation, intelligence, and community—powerful themes rooted in the area’s cultural identity.
The Raven has long held symbolic significance in cultures worldwide. In many Indigenous cultures, the Raven is seen as a creator and a trickster, symbolizing wisdom and transformation. Its adaptability and intelligence have made it a figure of fascination across continents. In European folklore, ravens are often seen as omens or messengers, with their presence being associated with both mystery and death. In Norse mythology, the ravens of the god Odin, Huginn and Muninn, represent thought and memory, reinforcing the Raven’s association with wisdom and the transmission of knowledge.
This installation aims to do more than just beautify the space—it’s about creating a place for people to come together, engage with art, and feel a part of something bigger. The courtyard is envisioned as a hub for creativity, conversation, and community.
The sculptures are strategically placed around the new planter boxes, which are part of a broader revitalization project aimed at breathing new life into the downtown area. This design encourages visitors to pause, reflect, and interact with the art while enjoying the fresh air and surrounding natural beauty.
In addition to the installation, the District of Kitimat plans to further develop the area with the addition of a night market and a coffee stall, creating a lively atmosphere for both locals and visitors. These additions will help transform the courtyard into a dynamic space for local vendors, artists, and small businesses to connect with the community.
“We see this as the beginning of something exciting for downtown Kitimat,” said Pat Mouland, spokesperson for the Kitimat Public Art Alliance. “The art installations and upcoming events will bring energy to this part of town, and we’re thrilled to be a part of it. The Raven sculptures are just one of the ways we’re showcasing the creative spirit of Kitimat.”
To further celebrate the town’s artistic vision, a single Raven sculpture has been placed at Coghlin Park, marking the entrance to Kitimat. This addition serves as a welcoming symbol for visitors arriving in the town and reinforces Kitimat’s commitment to public art.
With the Raven sculptures now on display, both the District of Kitimat and the Kitimat Public Art Alliance are eager to see how the space evolves. Once an underutilized area, the courtyard is now a place for people to gather, interact with art, and experience a stronger sense of community. This project is a significant step in the revitalization of Kitimat’s downtown, and both groups hope it will inspire even more creative initiatives in the future.
