Terrace Community Forest Unveils Sockeye Salmon Sculpture on Ferry Island Trail

Terrace, BC – The Terrace Community Forest, in collaboration with the City of Terrace, is excited to announce the unveiling of a stunning three-dimensional Sockeye Salmon sculpture along the Ferry Island Trail Network. Created by local sculptor Great Bear Ironworks, this public art piece honors the critical role that salmon play in the Skeena River ecosystem, a region renowned for its extraordinary salmon runs.

Mounted on a locally sourced granite boulder, the sculpture symbolizes the deep connection between the community and the river that sustains it. Designed to reflect the resilience and power of Sockeye Salmon as they navigate the Skeena River, the artwork serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of protecting these vital species and their habitats.

The life cycle of the Sockeye Salmon is a remarkable journey of survival. Born in the cold, clear waters of the Skeena River, they spend several years maturing in the ocean before returning to their birthplace to spawn. Their journey is a testament to endurance, navigating obstacles and hardships to complete the circle of life. This natural phenomenon not only sustains the fish but also supports the local ecosystem, providing nourishment for a wide range of wildlife and humans alike. For Indigenous communities, the salmon is a sacred gift, deeply intertwined with cultural traditions, spiritual practices, and a source of sustenance for generations.

“Salmon are more than just a resource; they are the lifeblood of our culture and our economy,” said Kim Haworth, a representative from the Terrace Community Forest. “This installation not only celebrates their significance but also underscores the urgent need to protect our rivers for future generations.”

The installation was made possible through the partnership of the Terrace Community Forest, the City of Terrace, local volunteers, and the expertise of Great Bear Ironworks. The sculpture stands as a testament to the creativity and dedication of local artisans and the collective effort to raise awareness about conservation.

The Sockeye Salmon sculpture is now on display along the Ferry Island Trail, inviting the public to reflect on the region’s natural beauty, the perseverance of the salmon, and the deep cultural heritage tied to the salmon runs.
